Bob & Shann: The Quest They Never Planned

Some love stories begin with a grand gesture. Bob and Shann's began with a twenty-sided die and four years of friendship that was quietly becoming something more.

They didn't set out to find each other. They just both loved the game — the world-building, the storytelling, the particular kind of community that gathers around a table and creates something together. He was an air traffic controller who stuttered a little when a campaign got exciting. She was an artist who painted miniatures with the same care she brought to everything. For four years they showed up, rolled dice, and built the kind of friendship that doesn't announce itself. It just grows.

It took his teenage daughter (me, this writer) — someone who loved them both — to say what they hadn't yet said to each other. She went to each of them separately and told them the same simple thing: you should date. And somehow, that was all it took.

Six months in, Shann's cat went missing. Kerr disappeared into a rainy night, and Bob showed up anyway — loafers, no socks, full Don Johnson energy — umbrella in hand, walking through the rain calling out into the dark: "Kerr. Cat. Come home. Your mom is worried about you."

Completely clueless about how he looked. Completely certain about why he was there.

Shann said that was the moment she knew.

Not a perfect speech. Not a grand romantic evening. Just a man in the rain, showing up because she needed him to — earnest, unhurried, and entirely himself.

They got married five years later and still go to gaming conventions together.

Kerr, for the record, came home.
