Jay & Boa: 1,000 Miles Later

Jay and Boa met during their first semester of college. Two strangers who quickly became inseparable. What started as hours spent hanging out together slowly, naturally, became something more. By the time spring semester rolled around, they made it official. They never looked back.

Nine years is a long time to choose someone. It's also long enough to be tested. Jay and Boa did the long-distance stretch, packed up their lives not once but twice, each move putting another 500 miles between them and whatever they'd left behind — and somehow, every time, they ended up in the same place together.

What keeps two people moving toward each other across that kind of distance? Jay will tell you it's simple: they just work. They balance each other out, filling in each other's gaps in the way that only happens when you've really paid attention to someone.

When it came time to propose, Jay picked the aquarium at the Academy of Sciences — the two of them surrounded by glass and blue light and slow-drifting fish, the rest of the world tuned out. A quiet question in a quiet place. Boa said yes beneath the water.

Earlier this month, they marked one year of marriage. The small civil ceremony with their closest people now a year behind them, and the rest of their lives still ahead.

Some love stories cross oceans. Theirs crossed state lines — twice — and arrived exactly where it was supposed to.
